The Body Sculpture with Maria Miasnikova

An actor must be clay – soft and bendable in the hands of the director and choreographer.

In the world of performing arts, that doesn’t stand still, that evolves, uses many new techniques, physical action on stage and in film, a modern actor must be able to keep up if they hope to be relevant. They must be prepared for the challenging poses in blocking, must be able to exist as a character with a completely different body language than their own, they should even be prepared for dancing, as all these are inherent elements of the craft.

In our course we will help you understand your body, how it moves, what it’s capable of, and how prepared it is for stage work. We will show you how to improvise through movement and express your thoughts through your body. As every sound essentially moves through the body, we will teach your body to be reactive to that, to communicate without words.

In “The Body Sculpture” we will show you how to make your body your most important acting instrument, what techniques to use to achieve your goals. You will be able to expand your physical abilities, and you will be surprised at how much more your body is capable of, than what you thought.

We base our programme on the experience of such great theatre practitioners as Grotowski, Meyergold, Duncan, Humphrey, Laban, and many others. We believe an actormust have a versatile personality, to be able to use both verbal and non-verbal language, be prepared to behave in a crazy and unpredictable manner, study modern and classical literature, and be a fan of fine art, sculpture and architecture, in order to be prepared for any character and any type of challenging performance a director or choreographer might throw at them.
